Developing implant technologies and evaluating brain-machine interfaces using information theory

چکیده
Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) hold promise for restoring motor functions in severely paralyzed individuals. Invasive BMIs are capable of recording signals from individual neurons and typically provide the highest signal-to-noise ratio. Despite many efforts in the scientific community, BMI technology is still not reliable enough for widespread clinical application. The most prominent challenges include biocompatibility, stability, longevity, and lack of good models for informed signal processing and BMI comparison. To address the problem of low signal quality of chronic probes, in the first part of the thesis one such design, the Neurotrophic Electrode, was modified by increasing its channel capacity to form a Neurotrophic Array (NA). Specifically, single wires were replaced with stereotrodes and the total number of recording wires was increased. This new array design was tested in a rhesus macaque performing a delayed saccade task. The NA recorded little single unit spiking

Identification of mild cognitive impairment disease using brain functional connectivity and graph analysis in fMRI data
Background: Early diagnosis of patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's, known as mild cognitive impairment, is of great importance in the treatment of this disease. If a patient can be diagnosed at this stage, it is possible to treat or delay Alzheimer's disease. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is very common in the process of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. In th...

Revolutions1 in semiconductor device miniaturization, bioelectronics, and applied neural control technologies are enabling scientists to create machineassisted minds, science fiction’s “cyborgs.” In a paper published in 1999,1 we sought to draw attention to the advances in prosthetic devices, to the myriad of artificial implants, and to the early developments of this technology in cochlear and ...
متن کاملRe-thinking EEG-based non-invasive brain interfaces: modeling and analysis
Brain interfaces are cyber-physical systems that aim to harvest information from the (physical) brain through sensing mechanisms, extract information about the underlying processes, and decide/actuate accordingly. Nonetheless, the brain interfaces are still in their infancy, but reaching to their maturity quickly as several initiatives are released to push forward their development (e.g., Neura...

Recent research has pointed towards further understanding the cognitive processes involved in interactive information retrieval, with most papers using secondary measures of cognition to do so. Our own research is focused on using direct measures of cognitive workload, using brain sensing techniques with fNIRS. Amongst various brain sensing technologies, fNIRS is most conducive to ecologically ...
